If you check the current standings for the race, you will see that many mushers have dropped dogs along the way. Do you wonder what happens to those dogs? The Iditarod Race Committee has a plan for their care and safety. Many are transported back to Anchorage or on to Nome by airplane. Here's a picture of some dogs on their way to Anchorage.
